Tour Overview
This 8-day journey begins in Marrakech and takes you across the spectacular High Atlas Mountains via the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The first part of the trip focuses on Morocco’s historic kasbahs and ancient caravan routes. You visit the impressive Kasbah of Telouet and continue through the scenic Ounila Valley to reach the UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou. The journey then moves through the desert gateway of Ouarzazate and the palm-filled Skoura Oasis before exploring the dramatic landscapes of the Dades Gorges and the towering cliffs of the Todra Gorge.
As the adventure continues eastward, the scenery gradually shifts into the vast Sahara. Passing through desert towns like Erfoud and Rissani, you reach the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. Here you experience a camel trek at sunset and spend a magical night in a desert camp under the stars. The route then heads west across Morocco’s rugged hamada landscapes, stopping in fossil-rich towns such as Alnif before entering the lush palm groves of the Draa Valley and the historic kasbah villages around Agdz.
The final part of the itinerary explores the deeper Sahara and southern Morocco. After visiting Zagora and the pottery village of Tamegroute, the journey reaches the remote dunes of Erg Chegaga for another desert camp experience far from crowds. From there, the route crosses the dry bed of Lake Iriqui and continues through Berber towns known for carpets and saffron, including Taznakht and Taliouine, before arriving in the historic walled city of Taroudant.
The tour concludes with a scenic drive along Morocco’s Atlantic coast. After passing through the seaside city of Agadir and the famous argan forests, you arrive in the charming coastal town of Essaouira. Known for its blue-and-white medina, fishing harbor, and historic ramparts such as the Skala de la Ville, Essaouira offers a relaxed atmosphere before the journey ends with a return to Marrakech. This itinerary combines Morocco’s mountains, kasbahs, oases, deserts, and coast into one diverse and unforgettable adventure
Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech – Telouet – Ait Ben Haddou
Your journey begins in Marrakech as you depart in the morning and cross the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest major mountain pass in Morocco at 2,260 meters. The road winds through dramatic High Atlas landscapes and Berber villages. You then visit the historic Kasbah of Telouet, also known as the Glaoui Palace, once the powerful seat of the Lords of the Atlas. In the afternoon, travel through the beautiful Ounila Valley, a colorful canyon dotted with salt mines, ancient villages, and troglodyte caves. By late afternoon you arrive at the famous fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou. Spend the night in a traditional riad inside or near the ancient ksar.
Day 2: Ait Ben Haddou – Skoura – Dades – Tinghir
After breakfast, continue your journey through Ouarzazate, often called the “Gateway to the Desert.” Drive onward to the lush Skoura Oasis, known as the Oasis of 1,000 Kasbahs. Here you visit the beautifully preserved Kasbah Amridil. The road then takes you through the fragrant Valley of the Roses, famous for its rose harvest and traditional products. Later, travel along the dramatic “Monkey Toes” road into the breathtaking Dades Gorges with its unique rock formations. In the afternoon you continue to the town of Tinghir for the night near the entrance of the Todra Gorge.
Day 3: Tinghir – Erfoud – Merzouga
The morning is dedicated to exploring the towering limestone cliffs of Todra Gorge, where rock walls rise nearly 300 meters above the narrow canyon floor. Afterward, continue your drive toward the Sahara, passing through the desert town of Erfoud, well known for its fossil workshops, and the historic market town of Rissani. By afternoon you reach Merzouga at the edge of the magnificent Erg Chebbi. At sunset you switch to camels for a peaceful trek of about 1.5 hours into the dunes. The night is spent in a luxury or traditional desert camp beneath the stars.
Day 4: Merzouga – Alnif – Tazzarine – Agdz
After sunrise in the desert, depart the dunes and travel westward across the rugged landscapes of the Sahara’s rocky plateau, often called the Black Desert or hamada. Stop in the small town of Alnif, famous for its trilobite fossils, and continue through the quiet desert settlement of Tazzarine. In the afternoon you enter the lush Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley lined with palm groves and ancient kasbahs. Arrive in Agdz, overlooked by the distinctive peak of Jbel Kissane. Overnight in a restored kasbah in the nearby village of Tamnougalt.
Day 5: Agdz – Zagora – M’Hamid – Erg Chegaga
Follow the Draa River south through endless date palm groves toward Zagora. Along the way, stop at the pottery village of Tamegroute, known for its traditional green-glazed ceramics and historic library. Continue to M’Hamid, the last town before the true Sahara where the paved road ends. From here you take a 4×4 off-road journey across desert landscapes for about two hours to reach the remote dunes of Erg Chegaga. This vast dune sea is quieter and wilder than Merzouga. Spend the night in a desert camp surrounded by silence and stars.
Day 6: Erg Chegaga – Taznakht – Taliouine – Taroudant
In the morning, travel off-road across the dry bed of Lake Iriqui to reach Foum Zguid. Continue north to Taznakht, famous throughout Morocco for its Berber carpets and weaving traditions. Later you stop in Taliouine, known as Africa’s saffron capital. By evening you arrive in Taroudant, often called “Little Marrakech” thanks to its impressive red ramparts and lively souks. Overnight in Taroudant.
Day 7: Taroudant – Agadir – Essaouira
After a short visit to the souks of Taroudant, drive west toward the Atlantic coast and the modern seaside city of Agadir. From there, follow the scenic coastal road north toward Essaouira. Along the way you may pass through argan forests where goats famously climb the trees to feed on the fruit. In the afternoon arrive in Essaouira, historically known as Mogador. Explore the historic medina, the harbor, and the impressive sea bastions of the Skala de la Ville. Overnight in a riad in the blue-and-white coastal town.
Day 8: Essaouira – Marrakech
Spend a relaxing morning in Essaouira enjoying the beach, strolling through the medina, or shopping for traditional Thuja wood crafts and local art. In the afternoon, drive about three hours inland back to Marrakech. Along the route you can stop at a traditional argan oil cooperative to learn how the famous oil is produced. The tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel or at Marrakech Menara Airport.
